HOW TO PLAN YOUR BEDROOM'S LAYOUT

You’ve thought about the atmosphere you want to create in your bedroom, the colour you’ll choose to help achieve that ambience, the bedding and maybe even the furniture but where should you put everything? Choosing the layout of your room may be the most important step in creating your perfect bedroom space.

It is a good idea to start by measuring and drawing out the floor plan of your bedroom.  There are several websites which help you draw your floor plan, including planyourroom.com.  Add key elements onto your plan including the door, window, chimney breast or fitted wardrobes, it is helpful to add an extra layer of detail such as the position of plug sockets and radiators.

Start planning your room layout with the position of your bed.  You need to ensure that you have enough room to walk around your bed with ease but in many instances there is only one position which works for a bed.  Often rooms have been designed for a single bed position, indicated by the placement of plug sockets, radiators and wall lights.

Larger bedrooms will allow for more creativity and flexibility in their layout, so think about the flow and feeling of the room when deciding where to place your furniture. In a larger room you can create a contemporary space by selecting a larger wardrobe which incorporates interior drawers, this removes the need to have multiple smaller items of furniture and enables you to select feature items such as a statement bench for the end of your bed or an upholstered chair.  For a large bedroom refurbishment it is a good idea to consider the type of radiator in the room, a contemporary vertical radiator can make the space dramatically more versatile.

Smaller rooms can be a tricky but with clever placement of your bed, perhaps in a corner, you can create the illusion of a spacious bedroom. Clever storage solutions are key when space is limited.  Consider selecting a storage bed which enables you to store bulky items and out of season clothes and in turn allows for a smaller wardrobe.  A storage box is also a great way to add interest whilst giving you somewhere to tuck away spare bedding or your winter duvet.

Here are our top tips for creative bedroom design…

  1. Don’t choose furniture that it too big for the space. Measure and then measure again!

  2. Employ lots of clever storage that will hide your things but look good doing it.

  3. Keep your bedroom tidy and free of clutter.  This is especially important in small spaces.

  4. Consider  the colour carefully. Take a look at our last blog on colour theory to find out what emotion and atmosphere certain colours help to create.

  5. Don't overlook the ceiling. You can add some real flare or subtle texture by choosing the perfect lampshade.

  6. Think about your textiles. Mix it up or keep it simple but your bed linen and soft furnishings can really add something special to your bedroom.
