3 Interior Trends That Will Stand the Test of Time

If the pandemic has meant more time at home, have you been tempted to make some changes? Covid-19 meant most of us had to stay in the house, giving us a chance to really get to know our interior styling (or perhaps lack of it!) So join us as we take a look at 3 of the most popular trends to emerge over the last year; Cottagecore, Japandi and Eco-Conscious Design.

Cottagecore

Cottagecore is the romantic interpretation of rural life, drawing inspiration from the countryside. It’s perfect for those who pine for times when life was simpler but also enjoy their modern comforts. Whilst it works best in homes that already have existing features such as exposed beams, panelled walls and original floorboards, you can inject some cottagecore character into any home.

Think botanical, florals and natural materials. Reclaimed wood is a key material, bringing the whole look together. If it’s cosy, nostalgic and looks like it could have come straight out of your grandmothers home, you’re on the right track!

Japandi

Japandi is the mix of two cultures, blurring Japanese minimalism with the cosy coolness of Scandinavia. Japandi couldn’t be more of a contrast to Cottagecore, with its simple, clean, decluttered aesthetic. Use a more subdued palette; think grey, pale blues and earthy tones and feature natural materials.

Ways to create the perfect Japandi space include decluttering, using natural materials (especially light oak), using neutral tones whilst mixing dark contrast and introducing balanced, simple lighting that creates a warm atmosphere.

Could it be that spending so much time at home made people want to shed some of the material excesses that cluttered their homes and choose a peaceful, minimalist theme instead?

“This year reusing and recycling has been more on trend than ever!”

Kelly Hoppen of Kelly Hoppen Design

Recent global weather events have highlighted the fragility of our planet and now, more than ever, people are becoming more eco-aware, making choices to help the environment.

Conscious consumerism is a rising trend with people seeking furniture that is eco-friendly, multifunctional that is of high quality, built to be durable and with longevity in mind. Vintage furniture is also becoming popular as people look to upcycling for their next project.

“As a society and planet, we need to do more of make do and mend. Upcycling has of course been going on forever, but perhaps more people will want to learn the skills required and workshops will become more of a desire in domestic projects.”

Harriet Anstruther - Interior Designer
