Colour of the Year 2021

Since the world turned upside down almost 12 months ago, we’ve all lived in a constant unknown with events, holidays and special occasions all cancelled, kids being home-schooled, working from home and of course missing our friends and loved ones as we stay home to protect the vulnerable and the NHS. The world has collectively had a difficult year and yet, still some things remain, giving us a little sense of direction amongst the chaos. And with that, we wanted to share the Pantone and Dulux choices for Colours of the Year 2021 and spread a little joy and a snippet of colour with you.

Dulux Colour of the Year 2021

The uncertainty of this last year has made many of us reflect about a great many things; our work, our lives, and our home, to name a few. As people started to realise that they would be spending a great deal more time at home, tackling those outstanding DIY jobs and improving the spaces in which we live became priorities and welcome distractions. The want and need to connect to the outside world and bring the balance of nature back into the home as an antidote to this unsettled time, is now more important than ever and it’s with that sentiment in mind that Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2021 is Brave Ground.

‘Dulux colour experts have chosen Brave Ground™, a bolstering shade that connects back to nature and the simple things. A warm, earthy tone, it creates a feeling of stability, growth and potential; and provides a firm foundation for change and creativity in your home.’

Brave Ground is an earthy shade which is neutral but exudes a warmth into the space. It aids in creating that sense of sanctuary and calm, essential in a world that can be unpredictable and chaotic.

We have a range of leg options and neutral fabrics to suit this colour scheme and we think a woven fabric would really complement the natural aesthetic that Brave Ground inspires.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

Pantone also considered this tumultuous time when deciding what their colour of the year would be. They decided to take a slightly different approach however with their choice, which represents their perception of how people have tackled the difficulties they’ve faced and what they hope for the future. Unable to summarise this with one colour, they chose two, Ultimate Gray + Illuminating, two contrasting colours with one strong message.

‘A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.’ – Pantone Colour Institute

‘As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality. PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power. PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation. The colours of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, Ultimate Gray quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience.’ – Pantone Colour Institute

The sunny shade of yellow, allowing us to feel a sense of hope and positivity, paired with a subtle grey, which roots and calms us are both examples of our connection to the world around us, and whilst the choices from Dulux and Pantone are starkly different, they both take inspiration from nature and the emotions that arise from us being connected to it.
