Create the perfect cosy bedroom this winter

As winter draws in and we’re spending more time at home (even more now we’re in Lockdown 2.0), it’s natural to want to cosy up. We do this by slipping on our favourite PJs as soon as we get in from work, whacking up the heating, grabbing a blanket when we’re on the sofa watching Netflix and dimming the lights to make it feel extra snug. But, how about your bedroom? Do you make any changes as the cold weather closes in? Here are our top tips for creating that perfect cosy winter bedroom.

Blankets

In my opinion, you can never have too many blankets! Nothing says cosy like curling up under a big heavy blanket, experiment with texture; velvet, faux fur or wool are all great choices. A throw hung over the foot of your bed can really add to the sense of warmth. If you have lots of blankets, why not try rolling them up and storing them in a basket near your bed, then they’re easy to grab and look great when they’re not in use!

Bedding

As the chill starts to bite, it’s time to break out your winter duvet. We recommend a good quality down duvet because as well as offering some comforting weight to snuggle under, the feathers resist clumping to ensure consistent coverage and down is also breathable.

There is a vast choice when it comes to bedding but my winter favourites are my flannel / brushed cotton duvet covers. The brushed surface of flannel covers help trap air and body heat, while still allowing your skin to breathe. Compared to fleece or other man-made fibres, flannel covers will keep you warm, but won't cause you to wake up hot and bothered.

Floor

Don’t underestimate the difference a rug can make to the feel of the room. In the summer, hard flooring keeps the room open and airy, however, in the winter they can feel bare, cold, and uninviting. Adding a statement floor rug to your room will not only add warmth and insulation to your room but it will help absorb sound and let’s face it, is there anything nicer than your feet landing on a nice warm rug as you get out of bed?

Lighting

Making a change to the lighting in your bedroom is one of the quickest ways to transform the space into a cosy oasis. Its well known that bright lights can interrupt your natural sleep rhythm, so we’d always recommend softer lighting in the bedroom anyway, but during the winter months, think about how you can soften it even more. Warmer hue bulbs in the bedside lamps, dimmer switches and even adding candles for their inviting flickering warmth can make all the difference. For a festive feel consider stringing fairy across your bedhead or shelving.

Windows

You can lose a lot of heat through your windows, even if you have good glazing, adding some thick curtains can transform the ambience of a room and prevent heat loss. Short curtains are the best choice for windows with a radiator beneath, as floor-length designs will cover the heat source and trap the warm air behind the curtain.

Fragrance

Our sense of smell is intricately linked with our memory and popular wintry fragrances like warm vanilla, cinnamon, spiced apple, berries, and woody aromas are a great way to make our homes cosy and inviting, whilst triggering calm and happiness. A scented wax burner can be better suited to bedrooms and homes with children.
